Phil 310 ~ history of philosophy: ancient (crn 14938) Students also attend a discussion section each friday. Office hours (246sch): t 14:00-16:00, and by appointment. This course offers an introduction to ancient greek philosophy, with an emphasis placed upon a careful reading of selected primary texts. The primary objective of the course is an understanding of the methods and concerns presented within the philosophical works of plato and aristotle. Attention is paid to how these ancient philosophical projects maintain a commanding position within the western intellectual tradition. We are concerned with understanding the emergence of ancient greek philosophy as a revolutionary event that changed western history. We will consider the emergence of philosophy within the context of its historical situation, as it defines itself within the horizon of its own time, especially as it arises within a poetic tradition of myth and tragedy.
