Even in pe, women were instructed to work out differently than boys: they exercised at lower intensities. Sex differences are more pronounced in events where high levels of upper body strength are required (e. g. , shot put: however, in many other events, girls parallel the athletic accomplishments of boys within 15% difference. Puberty in girls: follicle stimulating hormone (fsh) and luteinizing hormone (lh) cause estrogen production from the ovaries. Occurs before puberty but increases greatly during puberty. When sufficient fsh and lh are secreted, ovaries are developed and estrogen secretion begins. Estrogen secretion: causes pelvis broadening, breast development, fat deposition in hips and thighs, increased bone growth. This is why girls grow faster than boys during the first few years of puberty.
