Somatic cells- all cells but reproductive cells, have 2 sets of 23 chromosomes, 46 total. Gametes- reproductive cells that only have 1 set of 23 chromosomes, 23 total. Mitosis- division of genetic material followed by cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm) Meiosis- cell division that yields non-identical daughter cells that have only 1 set of chromosomes: happens in the gonads (ovaries or testes) Mitotic (m) phase- includes mitosis and cytokinesis, shortest part of cell cycle: mitosis is broken down into 5 stages: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase. Interphase- 90% of cell cycle, divided into sub phases g1 s g2: g1 phase- first gap, cell grows, s phase- synthesis, grows as it prepares for cell division, g2 phase- second gap, grows more as it prepares for cell division. G1 s g2 m (daughter cells may repeat cell cycle)
