Individuals- people or objects included in the study. Variable- the characteristics of the individual to be measured or observed. Population data- data are from every individual of interest. Sample data- the data are from only some of the individuals of interest. Population parameter- numerical measure that describes an aspect of a population. Sample statistic- a numerical measure that describes an aspect of the sample. Descriptive statistics- involves methods of organizing, picturing, and summarizing information from samples or populations. Inferential statistics- involves methods of using information from a sample to a draw a conclusion regarding the population. Observational study- measurements/observations are conducted in such a way that does not change the response or the variable being measured. Experiment- a treatment is deliberately imposed on the individuals in order to observe a possible change. Placebo- a false treatment that the individual believes does something (used as the control group in medical practice)
