Study of memory used to be the territory of psychologists. Learning and memory can never be observed but they can be inferred. Independent variable- what we control/manipulate dissociating it from its previous experiences. Nonsense syllables (two consonants connected by a vowel) were created to study "pure memory. " He was the subject of his own experiment: however, learning cannot be dissociated from past experiences. In contrast the dual trace theory proposes that the forgetting results from the decay of two memory traces. One decays rapidly the other much slower: however, short-term memory is acquired more rapidly than long-term memory, psychologists study only the relationship between experience and behavior.
