Document Summary

Social psych exam 3 - chapters 3, 6, & 10. Social me william james coined this term to refer to the parts of self-knowledge that are derived from social relationships. The self is not something to be distinguished from the social world, but rather that it"s a social entity through and through. Who a person is in one social context (with soccer buddies) is often not the same as who the person is in another social environment (with a romantic partner). Introspection the notion of the narrated self fits into the broader theme - that our understanding of the social world, including ourselves, is often shaped by construal processes. Accuracy of self-knowledge sometimes we lack self-insight because of strong motives; there are certain things many of us would rather not know about ourselves. Much of the time, introspection leads to inaccurate conclusions about the self because we don"t have access to certain mental processes.
