BIOL 2061 Chapter Notes - Chapter 21.1-21.2: Carl Woese, Anagenesis, Cladogenesis
Introduction
• Taxonomy: Science of describing, naming and classifying species that still exist today as
well as species that have died out.
o Extant: species that still exist
o Extinct: species that have died out
• Systematics: study of biological diversity and evolutionary relationships among
organisms, both dead and alive
21.1 Taxonomy
• A hierarchy is a system of organization that classifies and entities into successive levels
• In biological taxonomy, every species is placed into several different nested groups
within a hierarchy
• Taxon/Taxa: each group at any level
• Carl Woese proposed the idea of domains
o 3 Domains
▪ Bacteria
▪ Archea
▪ Eukarya
•
• Supergroup: lies between a domain and a kingdom
• Domain > Supergroup > Kingdom > Phylum > Class > Order > Family > Genus >
Species
o Each one contains fewer species as you go along the line and they begin to have
more similar characteristics to one another
