Things highlighted in yellow is what I think is important. Other colors are for things that refer to each other. All pictures are either
from the textbook Music in Theory and Practice 9th Edition or notes that I hand wrote.
Chapter 7 Texture and Textural Reduction
Important Concepts
- Sound of music is direct result of the instruments and voices the composer uses
and also the way they are combined
- Texture
- Refers to the way melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic materials are
combined in a composition
- Texture needs to be dealt with in a more specific way, since a change of
texture often mark formal divisions in music, and textural matters often
complicate harmonic analysis
- Often described in terms of density and range
- Isn’t as useful analytically
- Density
- “Thick” consisting of many voices or parts
- “Thin” consisting of few voices
- Range
- “Widelarge interval between lowest and highest tones
- “Narrowsmall interval between lowest and highest tones
- Texture Types
- Description of texture type is much more precise than just density and
range
- Most common texture types are monophonic, polyphonic, homophonic,
and homorhythmic
- Monophonic Texture
- Simplistic texture type
- Consisting of a single melodic line
- Can be expanded by doubling in octaves or other intervals
- Also called parallelism
- Polyphonic Texture
- Consists of two or more lines moving independently or in imitation
with each other
- May be similar or contrasting in character
- Homophonic Texture
- Most common texture type in Western music
- Made up of a melody and an accompaniment
- Accompaniment provides rhythmic and harmonic support for
melody
