Module 15: infancy and childhood: maturation- the ordered sequence of biological growth. Infants- have all of their brain cells, but an immature nervous system: ages 3-6- the most rapid growth of frontal lobes occurs, develops rational planning, associative area"s develop last, allows thinking. Memory and language: motor development, most babies walk around 12 months. Infantile amnesia: average conscious memory begins at 3 and a half years old, childhood amnesia decreases at 7 years of age. Cognitive development- all the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, and communicating. Schemas- concepts or mental molds into which we pour our experiences: assimilate- the interpretation of new experiences into our current understanding, accommodate- the schemas to incorporate information provided by new experiences. Sense and action used to interpret the world. Infants lack object permanence- the awarness that objects continue to exhist even when they are not seen.
