Module 49: introduction to psychological disorders: defining psychological disorders. Psychological disorder- a syndrome marked by a clinically significant disturbance to an individual"s cognition, emotion regulation, re behavior: marked by dysfunctional thoughts or maladaptive behavior. The medical model- treating a mental illness that has been diagnosed through symptoms with therapy. Emphasizes how the body and mind are inseparable. Epigenetics- the study of how nurture shapes nature: used to understand disorders. Predict disorder"s future course: diagnostic and statistical manuel of mental disorders (dsm-5)- used to describe disorders. Module 50: anxiety disorders, ocs, and ptsd: anxiety disorders- marked by distressing, persistent anxiety or dysfunctional anxiety-reducing behaviors, generalized anxiety disorder- marked by excessive and uncontrollable worry, more common in women. Panic disorder- when anxiety escalates into a panic attack. Phobias- persistent, irrational fears that may cause people to avoid a certain object, activity, or situation. Specific phobias are related to a certain object/ fear. Social anxiety disorder is a form of extreme shyness.
