PHILO-120 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Isomorphism, Healthy City
Document Summary
Start with the origins of the state function theory. Function of x= the special work of x- what (a) only x can do, or (b) what x can do better than any other thing. Things with functions perform these well or poorly. Things with functions have virtues or vices. What is the relationship of virtues/ vices assumptions. That justice is a virtue of human beings and of societies. That justice is one thing in both that state and the soul (semantic theory) The thesis that the state and soul can be partitioned in similar ways, and have similar functions (and virtues) So look for justice in the larger thing first. Just things (soul, state) "participate" in the form by sharing whatever it takes to be just. Therefore, the principles of specialization and division of labor are dictated by nature. The best way to organize society is therefore to divide tasks according to innate abilities.
