Document Summary

Criminal justice systems often make records available to the public through online databases. These records can be seen as a credential. The credential of a criminal record, like educational or professional credentials, constitutes a formal and enduring classification of social status, which can be used to regulate access and opportunity across numerous social, economic and political domains. Tl;dr: your criminal record can come back to bite you in the ass in pretty much every aspect of life, ruining the lives of convicted criminals. It is estimated that over 800 people have been killed by police in 2016. Over 215 of those are black men (estimated that 60% were unarmed) Native americans and black men are the most at risk. Prohibited only in certain areas by local ordinance. Penalties for violating local ordinances are minimal. Tobacco is one of the most harmful recreational drugs, but is not treated as such.
