Document Summary

Segment of dna molecule containing info for synthesis of functional biological product- gene. Storage and transmission of biological info are only known functions of. Ribosomal rnas- components of ribosomes, which carry out synthesis of proteins. Messenger rnas- intermediaries, carry genetic info from one or a few genes to a ribosome. Transfer rnas- adapter molecules that translate info in mrna into specific sequence of amino acids. Nucleotides and nucleic acids have characteristic bases and pentoses. Derivative of two parent compounds- pyrimidine and purine. Both dna and rna contain two major purine bases. Both dna and rna have two major pyrimidines- Both have cytosine, but dna has thymine and rna. Nucleic acids have two kinds of pentoses. Recurring deoxyribonucleotide units of dna contain 2"- deoxy-d-ribose, and ribonucleotide units of rna contain. Both types of pentoses are in their b-furanose (closed five-membered ring) form. Phosphodiester bonds link successive nucleotides in nucleic acids.
