In every town, the community church had complete liberty to stand alone. Each congregation chose its own minister and regulated its own affairs. In puritan towns, villages ran their own affairs. At yearly meetings, residents chose a group of selectmen who governed until the next meeting. Scottish presbyterians from ulster, ireland forced from england around 1710. Parliament prohibited export of goods (no income), prohibited presbyterian practices, and english landlords raise rents. Suppressed native peoples, settled on lands that may have been already owned. Bound all residents in a religious and social commitment to unity and harmony. Became basis for even land division and city planning. Popular among women and young men (who would inherit the least amount of land).
