Bone is made up of several different tissues, such as cartilage, epithelium, and post tissue/ nervous tissue, together function and form the skeletal system. Osteology: study of specific bone structures and treatment of certain disorders that have to do with the bone. Functions of bone and the skeletal system: support, protection, assistance in movement, mineral storage and release, blood cell production, triglyceride storage, support. Providing attachment points for muscle tendons: protection. Rib cage: heart and lungs: assistance in movement. Muscles contract: pull of bone to produce movement: mineral storage and release. 18-20% of the body weight is made up of bone tissue that stores several types of minerals. If other body parts need these minerals they are distributed from the bone into the blood vessels and taken where needed. Produces red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets. Consists of: blood cells, adipocytes, fibroblasts, macrophages.
