Chapter 13 Vocabulary
• Model code of professional responsibility
o An older set of standards governing attorney ethics developed by the
American Bar Association
• Model rules of professional conduct
o A set of ethical rules developed by the American Bar Association in
the 1980s. The model rules have been adopted by more than half the
states
• Confidentiality
o The ethical rule prohibiting attorneys and paralegals from disclosing
information regarding a client or a client's case
• Attorney-client privilege
o A rule of evidence that prevents an attorney from being compelled to
testify about confidential client information
• Conflict of interest
o The ethical rule prohibiting attorneys and paralegals from working for
opposite sides in a case
• Contingency fee
o Attorney compensation as a percentage of the amount recovered
rather than a flat amount of money or an hourly fee
