DEP 4464 Chapter 4: Health Across Adulthood
Document Summary
Life expectancy can be examined from the perspective of the basic development forces: Tendencies toward short/long lives tend to run in families. Environmental factors modify genetic heritage & shorten lifetime (e. g. disease & toxic chemicals) Average longevity: length of time it takes for half of all people born in a certain year too die. Computation considers people who die at any age. When is computed at other points in life span, calculation is based on all people who are alive at that age. Maximum longevity: maximum length of time an organism can live. Even if we could eliminate all diseases, most researchers estimate the limit to be about 120 years. Active life expectancy: the age to which one can expect to live independently. Dependent life expectancy: the age to which one can expect to live with assistance. Alexander graham bell was one of the firsts to demonstrate systematically the benefits of coming from a long-lived family.
