According to van maanen, there are 4 stages in the process of becoming a law enforcement oicer. The pre-entry stage centers on the factors that mold one"s decision to become a police oicer. This development is important for it is here that the police subculture is born. The change stage or encounter stage is the third period. Ater graduaing from the academy, the rookie meets the harsh realiies of the streets. These oicers have come to realize that police wok difers dramaically from the dreams they once held. Why would anyone want to become a police oicer: most people don"t think of police work in the ways we just outlined, they hold a completely diferent outlook, hollywood images. This most recent cohort difers drasically from its predecessors. Some of these new members are college graduates, some are black, and some are even female.
