Vehicular collisions are the most frequent cause of accidental deaths (automobile accident is #1: it is not uncommon to see police oicers responding to priority calls at high rates of speed with lights and sirens blaring-hazardous condiions. Disturbance calls, which subsume such incidents as family quarrels and person with a gun calls, outdistanced all other types of situaion. Atemping arrest situaions provided a fair share of assaults. Three quarters of the downed oicers were over 30 and six out of 10 had contributed less than 10 years of service. Almost half of the oicers killed during the performance fell in the south. Almost half of the shooing incidents occurred from less than 5 feet away. Background of police killers: four out of 5 had a prior criminal arrest and 2/3 had one prior convicion, half of those earlier arrest were for violent crimes, a quarter had a weapons violaion.
