Many observers today prefer to arrange occupaion on a coninuum. In this way they can talk about the degree to which a job is a professional enterprise. This strategy is important because it implies that occupaions may move up or down the status ladder. While what these workers know and can do may go far beyond the grasp of the average person, their knowledge is technical. A large disincion is drawn between technical knowledge and true intellectual achievement. Generally speaking, this training period takes place under the formal tutelage of advanced professionals in an academic environment. In sum, reliance upon theory, scieniic method, and the applicaion of theorteical principles to concrete situaions are what disinguish professions from occupaions. The rank and ile oicer does not acquire the type of intellectual understanding needed to it the deiniion of a profession. They learn more technical rather than theoreical knowledge.
