PSB-2000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Hearing Aid, Action Potential, Lamellar Corpuscle
Document Summary
Auditory system is the sensory for the sense of hearing. Sound is a mechanical wave that is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through a solid, liquid, gas composed of frequencies within range of hearing. It"s divided in 3 parts: outer, middle, inner section. Outer ear: funnel shaped structure designed to collect sound waves. After sound wave passes outer ear and auditory canal, it reaches eardrum. Eardrum: oval shaped; responds to movement of sound wave in a very precise manner. Vibrations are passed along to 3 tiny bones in the middle ear: hammer, anvil, stirrup: role of these bones is to intensify force of vibration. Innermost bone, stirrup, press on a membrane that opens into the inner ear. Organ of corti is actual organ of hearing, inside the cochlea (in inner ear). It contains receptors cells related to audition: hair cells or cilia. Pressure from previous structures, moves the liquid of cochlea and basilar membrane.
