Document Summary

Biological anthropologists aim to document the differences across human populations. Human variation at the individual and group level. Population: smaller groups within species that are both temporally and geographically restricted to some extent. Gene flow has been & still is occurring. Sub-species: a group of local populations that share part of the geographic range of a species, and can be differentiated from other sub-species. Can"t apply the term sub-species to humans biologically. Differences between the sub-species can be phenotypical, or sometimes they can be geno- typical & they can"t reproduce. Species are often characterized by differences in behavior. There is huge variation in chimpanzee mitochondrial dna, there are so many different sub- species. There is little to no geno-typical differences in humans. Blood types are concentrated in different areas of the world. High frequency of sickle cell trait in some populations where malaria is endemic. Selection for heterozygote (hba hbs); confers increased resistance against malaria.
