ANTH 410 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4-5: Neoevolutionism, Cultural Ecology, Evolutionism
Document Summary
It"s important in circumstances in which going too far into an emic point of view would throw off the validity of the ethnography such as what i have referred to above, but an etic perspective cannot stand alone. Idea that reality for people has tangible and intangible components plays into this, the etic is excellent for describing and analyzing the former rather than the latter, which is where an emic point of view is better. A lot early anthro focused on the intangible, then moved to the intangible which is where we are today (postmodernism) Depends on what the focus of your research is, if it"s more objective/tangible then it should be more etic and if your focus is the intangible/subjective then it should be more emic. For the above example i talk about, has a sociological element since he"s not a member of the alt-right but is still canadian.
