ANTH 410 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Puebloan Peoples, Potlatch, Enculturation
Document Summary
As far as i can tell (and to be honest i think i had some problems understanding the: contrast benedict"s concepts of apollonian and dionysian societies. Based on how she has presented them, do you think her examples are solid? differences between the two) the difference between apollonian and dionysian societies lies in conservation vs. excess respectively. Apollonian societies are ones which concern themselves with not doing things to excess and often value restraint and modesty, they are often described as stoic (in which case the puebloan peoples are to all appearances a solid example) whereas. Dionysian societies focus more on glorying in having an excess of goods, feeling, etc. They are very demonstrative and could be described as valuing debauchery. In this case the kwakiutl, assuming the potlatch did exist in antiquity as it would be a perfect example, are also a solid example on the surface.
