Document Summary

In cytosol, one 6carbon glucose molecule is converted to two 3 carbon pyruvate molecules; net of 2 atp are produced for each glucose molecule: stage ii: citric acid cycle. During glycolysis (stage i), cytosolic enzymes convert glucose to pyruvate: glycolysis ~ first stage of glucose oxidation; occurs in cytosol; does not require molecular oxygen (anaerobic respiration, catabolism ~ biological breakdown of complex substances into smaller ones. In glycolysis, cytosolic enzymes convert glucose to 2 molecules of pyruvate and generate. 2 molecules each of nadh and atp: rate of glucose oxidation via glycolysis is regulated by inhibition or stimulation of several enzymes, depending on cell"s need for atp. In absence of oxygen (anaerobic conditions), cells can metabolize pyruvate to lactic acid or to ethanol and co2 in process converting nadh back to nad+ In presence of oxygen (aerobic conditions), pyruvate is transported into mitochondrion, where it is metabolized to co2, generates abundant atp.
