The disillusionment was so deep and bitter mainly because the political democrats and republicans were left disillusioned by the political system leaders were unable to halt the drastic economic changes that was happening in american communities: Things that had contributed to american economic prosperity after world war 2 were starting to come loose. There was a growing economic recession within months of nixon coming to office. Unemployment climbed economies of foreign countries like japan and germany presented formidable competition to american industries. Overseas factories were able to manufacture goods like cars and steel more efficiently and cheaply than americans could due to their newer technologies. American companies had not needed to build for efficiency in the absence of foreign competition. Now however, u. s. companies began to cut jobs and move factories abroad.
