Document Summary

Life: the science of biology, by sadava et al, 10th edition, volume 1. To speed up a reaction, an energy barrier must be overcome. Enzymes bind specific reactants at their active sites. Enzymes lower the energy barrier but do not affect equilibrium. Speed up the rate of a reaction. Increase reaction rate by 1 million to 1017 times. In catalyzing reaction, enzyme use 1 or more mechanisms: put pressure on substances (put pressure in lactose to break it, orienting/ stretch bonds in substrate (protein getting change) molecules, making them unstable, temporarily adding chemical group. Can saturate enzyme, by increasing the concentration of substrate, once saturated, max rate is reach. Have to bond and favoring new bond form, sharing electrons, being shared in new way in either breaking or forming. Transition state= activation energy puts the reactants in a reactive mode. Activation energy= amount of energy required to start the reaction.
