The hellenistic era and the rise of rome. Not a democracy like athenians had, but gave power to the people. Lapsed in to civil war and peace did not return until a powerful leader brought monarchy. The hellenistic era: peloponnesian war had no winner. Athens yield to sparta but sparta collapses. Spartan army power weakened as professionalism in armies of greek poleis rose. Thebes defeated spartans in fair fights (spartans realize they aren"t invincible), poleis form alliances and fight each other. Convinced some greeks that compatriots were not able to self-govern. Most people advocate and hope for monarchy to take charge and est order: macedonia takes control. Macedonians had not taken to the idea of a poleis and sided against greeks in the persian wars. Est capital at pella and decorate court with artists and intellectuals. Macedonia was still volatile with powerful tribal leaders which made kings short-lived. Philip ii transformed macedonian army and united tribal factions.
