(1600-1858) was originally a private company granted a trade monopoly with the
East Indies. Its success in extracting concessions from native rulers (silk, spices,
etc) eventually led to its de facto control over much of modern India between
1757 and 1858
Opium Wars
Opium: highly addictive drug, illegal in Great Britain but sold in China (also illegal
in China)
FIRST WAR: 1839-1842
1839 Commissioner Lynn confiscates 7 million dollars worth of opium and throws
it in the harbor (relate to Boston Tea Party); causing first opium war
Chinese are defeated and have to pay for the cost of the opium dumped in the
water; Punitive Treaty comes about
SECOND WAR: 1856-1860
Britain is allowed to all the ports in China (Punitive Treaty) along with the rest of
the Europeans

gives the British access to the Chinese ports
Long Nineteenth Century
(1789-1914) a lot of changes within the century; so many things occurred that
were not necessarily in the 19th century, but it occurred around that time period
