Social structure: framework of society that exists above the level of individuals and provides the social setting in which individuals interact with one another to form relationships. Social dilemma: experience of each person in a group pursuing his or her self-interest regardless of the potential ruin for everyone. Legitimate economic worries can also create social dilemmas. Tragedy of the commons- indispensable but finite resources are available to everyone. Free-rider problem- individuals acquire goods and services without risking any personal costs or contributing anything in return. Privatization- having and owning your own resources, but this solution also creates other problems. Establish communication among individuals- everyone is aware of what is going, and what other individuals are doing. Centralized control of resources- having laws and regulations to prevent people from pursuing their own interest. Max weber- bureaucracy: large hiearchal organization that is governed by formal rules and regultions and that has a clear specification of tasks.
