Importance of work: source of income, sense of pride and accomplishment, source of identity and self esteem, provides meaning to our life and is a major part of our adult identity. 1900- shar of people working in factories equaled the share working on farms. 1930- 1 in 4 workers out of work. 1950 and 1960- post world war 2 boom rinsing wages, better standard of living, and growth of the suburbs. 1850- 80% of the us workers were in the primary sector of the economy. Industrial work peaked about 1950 and has been in decline ever since. Today more than 80% of workers have service jobs. 1950- emergence of the service sector and invention of computers, spread technology and new white collar jobs in advertising, consulting, and computer programming.
