BISC 1001 Chapter Notes - Chapter 22: Biogeography, Aureus, Continental Drift
Document Summary
Concept 22. 1: the darwinian revolution challenged traditional views of a young earth inhabited by unchanging species. Linnaeus created the binomial format for naming species and a nested classification system: grouping similar species into increasingly general categories (genus, phylum, kingdom, etc) Darwin thought classification should be based on evolutionary relationships. Darwin drew on ideas from the study of fossils. Paleontologists recognized that the types of fossils found varied in different layers of earth and therefor in different time periods; suggested change could take place through the cumulative effect of slow but continuous processes. Saw in fossils a chronological lines of descent leading to living species. Concept 22. 2: descent with modification by natural selection explains the adaptations of organisms and the unity and diversity of life. Left from england in december 1831 with the goal of charting poorly know areas of the south american coastline.
