Document Summary

Atom: smallest quantity of matter that still retains the properties of matter. Concept was first proposed by democritus in fifth century bc. First formalized by john dalton - said that atoms were tiny and indivisible. Now, we know that they are divisible, into subatomic particles. Element: a substance that cannot be broken down into two or more simpler substances by any means. Radiation: the emission and transmission of energy in the form of waves. Cathode ray tube: consists of two metal plates sealed inside a glass tube from which most of the air has been evacuated. Electricity going in one side, and coming out the other, but nothing inside to conduct it, so a cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube. Jj thomson applied a magnetic field to this, cathode rays can be deflected when this happens so it shows that the beam has a charge.
