Psychoanalysis-a theory of personality and a method of psychotherapy developed by. Sigmund freud; it emphasizes unconscious motives and conflicts. Psychodynamic theories- theories that explain behavior and personality in terms of unconscious energy dynamics within the individual. Repression- when a threatening memory, idea, or emotion is blocked from consciousness. Projection- when a person"s own repressed feelings are attributed to another person. When one person will insult another group because they feel guilty about the way they feel towards them. Displacement- when people direct emotions that make them uncomfortable or conflicted towards other objects that are not the ones they feel about. Regression- when a person reverts to a previous phase of psychological development. A young child under a lot of stress may go back to habits such as thumb sucking or sleeping with a toy. Denial- occurs when people refuse to admit that something unpleasant is happening. A partner in an abusive relationship not admitting they are being abused.
