Document Summary
Surface of the brain is known as cerebral cortex, is very uneven, characterized by distinctive pattern of folds or gumps(gyri) and grooves(sulci. ) Cerebral cortex- outer surface of brain, is associated with higher level processes such as consciousness, thought, reasoning, language, and memory. Longitudinal fissure- is the deep groove into functional centers. Lateralization- concept that each hemisphere in the brain is associated with specialized functions. Corpus callosum- allows the two hemispheres to communicate with each other and allows for information being processed on one side of the brain to be shared with the other side. Forebrain- largest part of the brain, two hemispheres are part of this. Contains the cerebral cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and the limbic system. Frontal- is located forward part of the brain and is involved in reasoning, motor control, emotion, and language. It contains motor cortex (involved in planning and coordinating movements) and prefrontal cortex (responsible for higher level thinking.
