Science of human development- seeks to understand how and why people change over. It is a science that depends on theories, analysis, critical thinking, and sound methodology: scientists from many different disciplines contribute to the understanding of developmental science. Nature-nurture controversy (hereditary-environment & maturation-learning: nature- refers to the influence of the genes that people inherit. Some genes are protective- making less people vulnerable to difficult or traumatic experiences: nurture- refers to environmental influences, which begin with the health and diet of the e(cid:373)(cid:271)r(cid:455)o"s (cid:373)other a(cid:374)d (cid:272)o(cid:374)ti(cid:374)ue lifelo(cid:374)g. Instead of asking how much each affects a child, one should ask which affects the child. Both genes and the environment affect every characteristic. Ex- some people get the gene for diabetes (nature) but never get the disease because nurture (diet and exercise) protects them.
