Freud is one of the most influential personality theorists in psychology. Many of his ideas and concepts have been tested and even rebuked by other psychologists, but his theory motivated these psychologists to come up with their own theories on personality. Freud is most famous for his concept of psychoanalysis, and he was influenced by a neurologist named jean-martin charcot, a hypnotists named hippolyte bernheim, and physician josef breuer. Freud believed transference, which he learned from his time with breuer, to be an integral part of psychoanalysis. This occurred when a patient began responding to his/her analyst as if they were a vital person in their life. Countertransference is also possible, in which the analyst becomes emotionally attached to the patient being treated. Freud believed everything about human personality can be boiled down to pure biological instinct. His viewpoint expressed a hedonistic perspective, which implies that humans seek pleasure and avoid pain just as other species do.
