In north america, the archival community has developed rapidly in the last half century, forming professional organizations, issuing educational guidelines, and promulgating a code of ethics. There are 3 principal routes into the archival profession: history, library and information science, other (experience in a related field without a history or library science degree). An understanding of the theory is required to enter the profession. Until recently, archival theory was more practical than theory: community sanction. The public recognizes the members of the profession. It is difficult for the public to sanction archivists when so few members of the public even understand what archivists do: professional cohesion or organization.
