Learning objectives: understand the major concepts described and their applications/importance. A model of development based on observations that allows us to make predictions. Development is also affected by the way we make sense out of our experiences. One of the important ways developmental theories differ from each other is the relative weight they attach to internal and external influences in the environment. Theories of child and adolescent development: for each of the theories presented, identify how it describes development (quantitative or qualitative) and also what drives development (biological processes, environmental event, or an interaction of the two). Note: i will not ask you about freud"s stages. Psychoanalytic theory: freud"s theory in which the way we deal with biological urges moves us through a series of stages that shape our personalities.
