Chapter 7
o Gender constancy
o Sense that gender is an innate, unchanging quality
o Adrenarche
o Distinct physiological developmental phase
o Typically occurring between the ages of 6 and 8 in which the adrenal cortex
starts to produce increased levels of androgens
o Gonadarche or pubarche
o The onset of puberty when the gonads produce elevated levels of sex hormones
leading to the development and differentiation of secondary sexual
characteristics
o Threshold exposure
o The level below which exposure to a toxic or dangerous substance or agent
whether natural or synthetic is harmless and above which harm may occur
o Comprehensive sex education
o Includes detailed information on both disease prevention and contraception for
those who are sexually active sometimes also including information on sexual
pleasure
o Abstinence sex education
o Emphasizes abstaining from sex until marriage
o Abstinence only education specifically does not cover contraception or sexual
pleasure
o There are two overlapping systems for reasoning and though
o System 1

o Implicit cognitive and neural processes that are automatic and may lead to
decisions and feelings differet fro oe’s coscious decisios
o System 2
o Explicit cognition that involves rational thought and conscious evaluation
o Normal distribution
o Mathematical frequency distribution represented by a bell shaped or normal
curve
o Many measures of human traits have an approximately normal distribution
