Tissue- is composed of specialized cells of the same type that perform a common function in the body. Cancers are classified according to the type of tissue from which they arise. Sarcomas- cancers arising in muscular or connective tissue (especially bone or cartilage) Carcinomas- most common type are cancers of epithelial tissue. Carcinomas and leukemias are most common types b/c developing cancer is related to the rate of cell division. Both epithelial cells and blood cells reproduce at a high rate. Connective tissue- is diverse in structure and function. All types of connective tissue have 3 similar components: specialized cells, ground substance, protein fibers. Ground substance: fills spaces between cells and fibers. Stem cell: divides to produce other types of cells. White blood cells: engulfs pathogens or produces antibodies. Elastic fibers return to their original shape and may stretch to ovr 100 times their relaxed sized w/o damage.
