Chapter 11: intrapartum and postpartum care of cesarean birth. Cesarean birth: an operative procedure in which the fetus is delivered through an incision in the abdominal wall and the uterus. Cesarean deliveries on the maternal request (cdmr): a cesarean section that is preformed at the request of the women before the start of labor. Major medical indications for a cesarean birth are: 1 in 3 infants in the us is born via cesarean. Maternal deaths in the us related to cesarean birth have decreased. The placenta does not penetrate the entire thickness of the uterine. The placenta extends fully through the uterine wall and may attach to other internal organs, such as the intestine or bladder. Admitted to the labor and birthing unit the day of surgery. Lab work done a couple days before admission. Usually due to an urgent or emergent cause such as fetal intolerance of labor or placental.
