Computer: a programmable machine that converts raw data--numbers, words, pictures, or sounds that represent facts about people, events, things, or ideas--into useful information--data converted into a meaningful format. Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp): (invisible computing); technology that recedes into the background. Smart homes: lights, climate, security, & entertainment are automated; a glimpse into the future of ubiquitous computing. Internet of things (iot): the connection of the physical world to the internet (ex: fitness & health trackers, smart thermostats, & monitors for babies). Embedded computer: a specialized computer that is part of another device (ex: gas pump, home appliance, traffic light, self-checkout line). Convergence: the integration of technology on multifunction devices such as smartphones. With this convergence, people have become accustomed to carrying technology at all times. Mobile payment systems: using a mobile device rather than cash or credit cards to pay for items. Green computing: the efficient & ecologically friendly use of computers & other electronics.
