AAAS 2000 Chapter : A LEGACY 550 YEARS IN THE MAKING
Document Summary
The civil rights movement (1954-1964) overt racism became illegal. This had two side effects on white american: increased belief in post-racial society, blame persisting struggles on black moral failure. Colored youths do not want to learn in school they don"t want to work hard, gravitate towards. Gang culture purely by choice or i am going to drop out of high school, i"m going to have kids, i am going to get a welfare check . Message, to be black is to be inferior. Racism is an invisible system of discrimination and injustice that was established and is upheld our social institutions. It affectively keeps people of color in permanent second-class status: entertainment, education, science, economics, polices, laws, values, attitudes, stereotypes, politics, religion, war. Jim crow was replaced with a host of new laws that were just as racist, but looked better on the surface. This has made it exceedingly difficult for white america to see the truth.
