I never thought about the fact that one could get away with murder since they are exploring a place where one must watch his back at all times. Unless witnessed by several others, some deaths could just be hearsay. Perhaps that is why kurtz went off by himself; because he knew people hated him and he would rather die on his own than be murdered. This quote just really caught my eye and lingered in my mind for a while. This makes me think of how the real reason to go into africa and other underdeveloped countries: to gain personal profit using their resources as opposed to trying to civilize them. Business seems to always be the underlying motive/truth to almost every major action, such as in this case.
