Document Summary

The story a planet made of diamond" tells of a planet discovered by radio telescopes around a pulsar. This object has the mass of jupiter, but it is not really a planet, ratherbeing the the stripped core of a white dwarf star. And even though this object has a composition dominated by carbon, it is not really diamond. This is an example of the usual media hype that is not quite wrong, but it really is wrong. Use the equation we derived in class; t=260 k/sqrt[0. 98] which closely equals to 260 k. The pole does not have a bright star near it, so this must be the south pole, and this means that the photographer is south of the equator. The pole is close above the horizon, so the photographer must be close to the equator. Towards the north, about 30 above the horizon. Of course, the north pole star is towards the north.
