BADM 7070 Chapter : Big Five Research Summary
Document Summary
Summary of research concerningthe big five and workplace. The following is a summary of the research that has been conducted to date concerning the relationships between the big five personality characteristics and workplace behaviors. Neuroticism is negatively correlated with job satisfaction whereas conscientiousness and extraversion are positively correlated with job satisfaction. The results for the other big five factors has been mixed. Interpersonal deviance (hostility and aggression toward co-workers) is negatively correlated with agreeableness. Organizational deviance (stealing, sabotage, etc. ) is negatively correlated with conscientiousness and positively correlated with neuroticism. The single factor that is most predictive of job performance across occupations is conscientiousness. Extraversion is positively correlated with performance in sales or customer service positions. Openness to new experience is positively correlated with success in training. Introverted, conscientious employees are less likely to be absent from work, as opposed to extraverted employees who are low on conscientiousness. Conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion are all related to cooperative behavior at work.
