Document Summary

In order to study and discuss different species of life, scientists must first name them. Organisms are arranged or grouped by the science of taxonomy. --taxonomy is the branch of biology concerned with naming and classifying the diverse forms of life. The two-part latin name of a species which consists of the genus name followed by the species name is what is know as the scientific name. By convention, scientific names are always italicized or underlined, and the first letter of the genus is always capitalized, while the first letter of the species name is always lowercased. A genus is a group that includes a number of very closely related species. Each species within a genus includes populations of organisms that can potentially interbreed under natural conditions. The reason for a scientific name is that it rules out any confusion or ambiguity when referring to the species across different cultures.
