Document Summary

Ionic bond: when two atoms have opposite charges and attract each other. Crystal lattice: what ionic compounds become when they are held together by ionic bonds. Octet rule: when atoms, in chemical reactions, tend to gain, lose, or share electrons so as to have eight valence electrons. Cations: when metals lose electrons take on the electron structure of the previous noble gas and form positive ions called cations. Anions: when nonmetals gain electrons to take on the electron structure of the next noble gas and form negative ions called anions. Covalent bonds: when two atoms share a pair of electrons. Electronegativity: a measure of an atoms attraction for the electrons in a bond. Polar covalent bond: where the atoms that are bonding have unequal bond. One side of the bond is slightly negative and the other is slightly positive. Nonpolar covalent bond: covalent bond where the electrons are shared equally between the two atoms.
