Document Summary

The greatness of the great war: princip"s terrorist act sparked a four-year global conflict. Participants in england called it the great war. For the germans, it was the weltkrieg, or world war. Entangling alliances: in the 1890s and 1900s, new competition between european states had led to the formation of a set of strategic alliances. A preliminary form of the franco-russian alliance was established in 1891 and finalized shortly thereafter. Treaty of london (1839) bound the british to defend belgium"s neutrality, but no one was certain britain would honor the treaty. One of their most successful activities was the organizing of political pressure groups and the wringing of more tax dollars from parliaments for military expansion. Russians, and british in particular engaged in ab armaments race, resulting in the building of enormous battleships and the stockpiling of large numbers of new breech-loading rifles and quick-firing artillery.
